Mark Stefik is currently leading work in web-based social indexes, re-inventing how people track discover, and understand information on the Web. Social indexes are hierarchically structured, topically-organized collections of web content that have been seeded by human curators. They continuously fetch new content from the web and use machine-learning to automatically associate relevant content with topics. Social indexes are for people who need to keep current in their areas of interest. They have limited time, and don't want to miss important information. Social indexes help them to track their interests efficiently -- by source and topic. Social indexes also enable people to discover related information outside of their specified interests and to more quickly understand information in new areas by drawing on the expertise of other people buiding social indexes

Overall Mark’s research is about how people create and share information. Earlier projects focused on hardware and software for collaboration in electronic meetings, object-oriented programming systems, and expert systems. He has contributed technology to several PARC spinouts. His seminal digital property rights for publishing work in the 90s led to the creation of ContentGuard, which was acquired by Microsoft, Time Warner, and Thompson in 2005. In a management tour of duty, Mark led PARC’s Information Sciences and Technologies research laboratory in developing sensemaking technology for intelligence analysts.

Mark is a Fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and his Ph.D. work at Stanford University was on experiment planning in molecular genetics.

Mark's takes on innovation and serial invention are documented in the book Breakthrough: Stories and Strategies of Radical Innovation, co-authored with Barbara Stefik. When he’s taking a break from writing code he can be spotted riding his yellow Harley."

Shown (left to right) are Sanjay Mittal, Mark Stefik, and Daniel Bobrow in around 1983. Mittal focused on the Loops automatic testing suite and coded much of the Truckin' game. Stefik developed the rule language, composite objects, and much of the system documentation. Bobrow did much of work on active values and the heavy lifting in the system underpinnings. Later, Stan Lanning (not shown) rewrote many portions of the system and developed the official documentation used by XSIS in its product.
